Description: What are the limits of freedom? Americans have grappled with this question for centuries. Explore debates that began in the nations infancy and trace how they have been renewed and transformed in U.S. history.

Free to Be U.S. examines the role that the First Amendment has played in promoting liberty and justice for everyone in the United States. The exhibition explores the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition in historical context. Thought-provoking interactive exhibits help visitors consider the relevance of these five freedoms today. Visitors are invited to assume the role of a Supreme Court justice and analyze five landmark First Amendment cases; apply First Amendment guarantees to current and controversial debates; and decide if there are limits to First Amendment rights in cases of national security, obscenity, and hate speech.

Free to Be U.S. is organized and circulated by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, located in Chicago, Illinois. The McCormick Foundation is committed to fostering communities of educated, informed, and engaged citizens.
