The Southwest Museum of the American Indian is the oldest museum in Los Angeles and houses one of the finest collections of Native American material in existence. The permanent galleries feature the people of the Plains, southwest, California and the northwest coast. The Museum offers cultural events, exhibits, workshops,lectures, music and dance performances, and festivals. Free parking. The Museum Store sells contemporary native art and jewelry. Take the Gold Line and exit at Southwest Museum.
The Autry National Center is a multicultural history center that has emerged from the intersection of three important museum organizations: Southwest Museum of the American Indian , Museum of the American West (formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage), and Women of the West Museum.
While each institution maintains its individual identity, the convergence of the resources and collections of the three entities creates a whole that is different, and provides the opportunity to define the contemporary relevance of history centers. By coming to terms with the complexities of the past, we begin to understand the complexities of the present and the possibilities of the future.
