Designed by renowned Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, MOCA at California Plaza's uncommon forms–pyramids, cubes, and cylinders–combine with unusual materials for a distinctive profile. From the street, the building's north and south wings come together by means of a copper-sheathed barrel vault to form a gateway to the museum. This massive vault, which houses the library, encases an arched window of delicately veined onyx.
Pyramidal skylights of red Indian sandstone on red granite punctuate the roofline and allow natural light to illuminate the galleries.
Situated below the barrel vault is the ticket booth, a cube-shaped construction paneled in green aluminum and outlined in a bright pink diamond pattern. The panels also cover the north side of MOCA's north wing, which houses staff offices and The MOCA Store. A sweeping staircase leads from street level to the sunken entry court. The 24,500-square-foot galleries are located on this level.
